Trouble adding a "new to me" printer to my network/account

I brought my parents printer to my house and would like to set up wireless printing on my home network. However, its black cartridge is low and it cannot print, and I get a message "can't replace cartridge until signed up with Instant Ink".... also, when I try to add the printer to my account, I am unable to do so without getting to the settings screen of the printer which I also can't seem to do because of the ink issue. I am more than willing to sign up for instant ink for this printer but can't! Please help!

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the Instant Ink enrollment. 

 

Please try these steps to generate a claim code - 

 

1) In a supported web browser on your computer or a mobile device, type the IP address or hostname assigned to the printer.

For example, if the IP address is 192.168.0.12, type the following address into a Web browser: http://192.168.0.12.

2) Click the Web Services tab.

3) In the Web Services Settings section, click Setup, click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions to accept the terms of use.

4) If prompted, choose to allow the printer to check for and install printer updates

5) When the printer is connected to the server, the printer prints an information page. Follow the instructions on the information page to finish the setup.
