The Ralink RT5390r that is in this laptop is a slow intermitant POS. I would like to replace it with a better quality dual band Intell card. Need to know what is compatible.

It seems your laptop is probably not encumbered by the HP whitelist issue where only certain wireless cards can be installed.

The Manual has this listed:

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 WLAN module 670691-001

However, if you search for that module by part number it is another crummy Ralink thing.

Unfortunately if you have the whitelist it means business and really cannot be overcome. And I apologize for sounding unsure but HP has never actually given a full explanation of when the whitelist was cut off, and exactly which models from the 2013-2014 era do and do not have it. Anything with a 4th gen Intel Core or higher is definitely out of the woods but anything before is a crapshoot. By trial and error it appears yours likely does not but I have heard contrary reports as well. A BIOS update will not help. The whitelist Code is in every version of the BIOS if you have it.

If you have no whitelist this is the card you want.

If you have the whitelist you should think in terms of a usb 802.11ac adapter.

Hi, @sprpilot690

No dv6/7-7xxx Intel has a BIOS whitelist.

If you want suggested replacement cards, here they are...

AC:

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0                   HP Part # 710661-001

N:

Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260AN 802.11 a/b/g/n 2x2 WiFi + BT4.0      HP Part # 717381-001

Make sure you uninstall the Ralink wifi card and driver in the device manager before installing the replacement card.

Are Wireless AC card backward compatible with Wireless N routers, or will they only connect to AC routers.

I have read mixed reviews...

Some forum members stated the AC cards only work on the 2.4 GHz band if one doesn't have an AC router.

Others say it works fine.

Now, I don't see why it wouldn't work on a dual band Wireless N router if the mode is set to mixed on the 5.0 GHz band.
