I lent my laptop to a friend, and they lost the charger. Then the laptop sat in storage for two years until I got another charger. I recently powered it on, and windows started to load,  but now the screen is black. Is this a motherboard issue, or something easy to fix?

Hi @Lainy94,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A black screen on your Compaq laptop can stem from several potential issues, especially given its history of sitting idle for two years. Here's a breakdown of what might be causing the problem and some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially fix it:

Possible Causes:

Battery or Power Issue:

  • If the battery degraded over time, it may not hold a charge, and the laptop could struggle to operate correctly.
  • The new charger may not be fully compatible or might not be providing enough power.

Display Connection Issue:

  • Internal cables connecting the screen to the motherboard may have become loose or corroded.
  • The screen itself could be damaged.

Software or Driver Problems:

  • Windows may have trouble booting properly due to outdated drivers or corrupted system files after sitting unused.

Hardware Degradation:

  • Components like the motherboard, graphics card, or RAM might have degraded while in storage, especially if the environment was not ideal (e.g., humidity or extreme temperatures).

CMOS Battery:

  • The CMOS battery may have drained, causing hardware misconfigurations.

Troubleshooting Steps:

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if it's removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reinsert the battery, plug in the charger, and try powering it on again.

Check for Power Indicators

  • Observe the power light, fan noise, or hard drive activity to confirm the laptop is turning on.
  • If no indicators are visible, the issue might be with the power supply, motherboard, or charger.

Test the Display

  • Shine a flashlight on the screen to see if a faint image appears. If it does, the backlight or inverter may have failed.
  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor using VGA, HDMI, or other compatible ports. If the external display works, the issue is likely with the laptop's screen or its internal connections.

Boot Into Safe Mode

  • Turn on the laptop and repeatedly press the F8 key (or the relevant key for your model) to access Safe Mode.
  • If it boots successfully, you might need to update or roll back display drivers.

Reseat RAM

  • Remove the back panel and reseat the RAM modules. Dust or poor contact can sometimes cause display issues.
  • If you have multiple RAM sticks, test one at a time in each slot.

Check for Beep Codes

  • Some laptops emit beep codes during startup to indicate hardware issues. Listen for these codes and consult the laptop's manual or Compaq's support site for their meaning.

Replace the CMOS Battery

  • Open the laptop and replace the small coin-shaped CMOS battery on the motherboard, which might resolve BIOS-related issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
