HP Notebook - 15-dy0013dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP Notebook 15-dy0013dx OS win 10 (64).  It has stopped picking up 5g from my router but still does pick up 2g.  Have tried everything i.e. restarts , diagnostics, etc.  Have 2 phones that pick 5g so I suspect it's a computer issue.  HP resources have been no help.

@RobertUC

Its specs

           https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06418898

which does not say anything about its Wifi adapter . From its Parts list

         https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer?searchtext=7FU54UA

you can see it ONLY has  WLAN RT BGN 1x1 +BT4.2LE M part #  L21480-005 which does NOT support 5G networks.

It only has ONE antenna, you can use the following wifi adapter to be able to pick up 5G SSID networks

Hi, @RobertUC

The parts list for your notebook indicates that it has a single band (2.4 GHz only) Wi-Fi card.

That is why your notebook cannot find or connect to any 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi networks.

HP PartSurfer

L21480-005
WLAN RT BGN 1x1 +BT4.2LE M

That would be a Realtek RTL8723DE model card.

RTL8723DE - REALTEK

If you want to upgrade the card to a dual band one, that is possible.

This model would work fine.

Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11 ac 1x1 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.2 Combo Adapter (MU-MIMO supported) HP part # L17365-005.

The card has a maximum throughput of 433 MBPS on the 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi band with an AC router and an excellent signal.

You can find this model on eBay, or Ali Express.

I see some Intel 3165 cards listed on the eBay listings, so don't buy those.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=L17365-005&_sacat=0&_sop=15

RTL8821CE - Buy RTL8821CE with free shipping on AliExpress

On the Ali Express listings, make sure the card has the HP Part # of 915620-001.

Below is the link to the service manual:

Maintenance and Service Guide HP 15 Laptop PC

PS: The Intel 3168 AC card will not work properly (Wi-Fi may work, Bluetooth will not) in your notebook because that card requires two antenna wires, and your notebook only has one.

It is not even listed as a supported card in chapter 3 of the service manual.

Not sure I understand as my computer has picked up the 5g without any problems for the past 2 years.  Thanks for the info.

You're very welcome.

Sorry, but that's absolutely impossible with the RTL8723DE wifi adapter.

There's no way to make it work on the 5.0 GHz band.

Please take a look at the RTL8723DE Wi-Fi card specs link I posted from Realtek's website.

General Description

The Realtek RTL8723DE is an 802.11bgn 2.4G single-chip that integrates Wireless LAN (WLAN) and a network PCIe interface controller with integrated Bluetooth 5.0 USB interface controller. It combines a WLAN MAC, a 1T1R capable WLAN baseband, and WLAN RF in a single chip. The RTL8723DE provides a complete solution for a high-throughput performance and low power consumption integrated wireless LAN device.
