just purchased a hp 17 ak007na laptop. no info on hp site re drivers or details of wireless card.

 I cannot locate any info re divers req for above laptop.  I plugged in a kali Linux usb iso which I managed to open but it will not give me internet access without upgrading drivers. Any ideas please?

Hi:

There is no information online regarding the model wifi card your notebook has.

So, the easiest thing to do would be to post the hardware ID for the device you see listed in the W10 device manager labeled as a Network Controller.

That is the generic name for the wifi card when the driver is missing.

ifi. Any ideas? I have tried all of the forums, blogs for kali etc but no one seems to know. This includes people that know their stuff. Cheers

IF it still has W10 on it and you can ID the WiFi, it may be possible to use ndiswrapper for your wants.

HOWEVER, and take this as criticism, of the 2000+ linux distro's (top 20 may have worked) you chose a roll your own version called Kali.

It's based on Debian, and Debian may be the place to look for drivers.

apt-get install b*   and say No and see if Broadcom et etc is listed.

has 26 assorted drivers, probably all .exe and not a lot of use in Kali, but vital to W10.

Is very ambiguous.  Locate drivers for what/which OS?

Better than plugging in a Kali USB would be to try a Linux that has/is (search on DuckDuckGo for 'shim in linux') and find a distro that is secure boot capable, like opersuse, debian, ubuntu, fedora et al.

Some of the latest wifi cards may not have drivers ported over yet, and ndiswrapper is perhaps the only choice possible if you have the W10 info/driver.

No doubt you have tried all the relevant linux commands by now, such as

sudo ifconfig -a

sudo hwinfo --network

sudo iwlist "wlan0"  channel

sudo lsmod

sudo lspci

sudo rfkill list all

If in doubt please ask.

Hi there. You responded to a question I placed on this forum recently.  Thankyou very very much for your assistance. Of all the forums that I visited,  and all of the responses that I received your advice was top 1% . 

Together with webhandlers and dll's  commands, kali linux with my laptop is now working brilliantly.  Maybe I should not say that as no doubt the computer Fates will punish me the next time I try to turn on wifi in kali!! persistence as you know is obviously the key.

incidentally,  your criticism ( which I appreciated by the way, as I know you only criticise constructively!!) about using kali was interesting.  Ars there other better pen test o/s's that you would recommend that don't cost an arm and a leg eg core impact that might be a bit more user friendly for a novice such as myself?
