Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

My hp envy laptop that runs on windows 8.1 will not even give me an option to sign into my Wi-Fi network.  I have been able to sign in 1000 times before but when I turned my laptop on this time it doesn't give me an option to do that now.  It says to plug in an ethernet cable.  The last time I used the laptop it worked fine, when I was done, I shut everything down like normal.  Please help because I called hp support and they can't help me unless I pay $59.00 and i don't have the money to do that.

Hi @Kim2022Rob

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

To be able to answer you effectively, we need some information.

  • Is your Windows 8.1 up-to-date?

  • Are your drivers updated especially your network adapter? If not yet, you can follow the steps found on this link on how to update your drivers in Windows 10. You can also check the latest updates for your network adapter on your manufacturer's website.

  • May we know why you have restarted your laptop? Have you installed an update or an application that requires rebooting your laptop?
  • Are you receiving an error message when trying to connect to the internet? If yes, what is the exact error message you're getting?
  • Have you tried connecting a different device to the same internet connection and got the same result?

If updating the driver didn't work, reinstall your network adapter by following the steps below:

  1. Right-click Start, then select Device Manager.

  2. Right-click the driver under Network adapter, then select Uninstall.

  3. Restart your laptop to automatically reinstall the drivers.

If it still didn't work, you can consider rolling back your Network adapter driver. Just the same with the steps in reinstalling your Network adapter up to step number 2, choose Roll Back Driver instead of Uninstall.

Let us know what happens after following the above-mentioned troubleshooting steps.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
