You may be attempting to contact the printer directly from the laptop. In that case you need the PIN from the printer which may be 12345678 depending on the printer.
I recommend the printer be connected to the router. Your laptop then accesses the printer through the router.
I assume you have an HP laptop a not Mac but the network connections are all the same for Mac or HP. It would be really helpful to know the model or product ID of the printer as there are possibly videos and users guides to make the connection less painless.
