HP G62-450SA XF483EA#ABU
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The Ralink RT5390 wifi mini card on my G62 (very old) has quit and I would like to replace it.

i found one on ebay but it's not the exact part number now that it's arrived.

The original part number is 630703-001 and I have received 691415-001 although both are RT5390 cards

Unsurprisingly i get the 'unsupported wifi card system halted' message.

I'm guessing this is a whitelisting issue. I'm on BIOS F.37 dated 2011.

I'd like to fix this without using a USB wifi device and i guess my options are :

1. Buy a card with the right part number (would this work even if I could find one?)

2. Get a hacked version of the BIOS with the whitelist removed (can't find yet one since this is a very old issue)

3. Get an updated HP BIOS from when they stopped having whitelists (can't find one of these either)

I'm  happy with help on any of these or other possibilities

Anybody got any advice? Many thanks in advance.

Looks like it is too old, I can't find good information of it

  • A1. Yes, right part # should work. BIOS knows it.
  • A2. Please don't play around with BIOS, it is the shortest way to brick your machine UNLESS you want to test and don't care the outcome.
  • A3. Can you find one ? I can't !

My option: Please try USB wireless dongle, you would get a lot better than you thought. I'm using the following one on my 9yrs old machine and very happy with it

You can find a similar one and much cheaper elsewhere.
