Hi @Redwingfred ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're setting up an HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and the printer name cannot be found during the setup process, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

Check the Basics:

  • Make sure the printer is powered on and properly connected to a power source.
  • Confirm that the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer or device you are using for setup.

Verify Wi-Fi Connection:

  • Check if the Wi-Fi signal on the printer is stable. If there are any connection issues, try moving the printer closer to the Wi-Fi router.
  • Ensure that the Wi-Fi network is working properly and that other devices can connect to it.

Restart Printer and Computer:

  • Turn off the printer, wait for about 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Restart your computer or the device you are using to set up the printer.

Update Firmware:

  • Visit the HP official website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. If there are, download and install them.

Use HP Smart App:

  • Download and install the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
  • Follow the instructions in the app to set up your printer. Sometimes, the HP Smart app can detect the printer even if it's not showing up during the traditional setup.

Check for Firewall/Antivirus Issues:

  • Sometimes, firewall or antivirus settings can interfere with the printer setup. Temporarily disable them and see if the printer becomes visible.

Manual Entry of Printer Name or IP Address:

  • During the setup process, you may have the option to manually enter the printer's name or IP address. Check the printer settings for this information and input it manually if necessary.

Reset Network Settings on Printer:

  • Consult your printer's manual to find instructions on how to reset the network settings. After resetting, go through the setup process again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
