Writing on behalf of a friend who accidentally locked herself out of the computer. It now won't boot up at all - she has a black screen after pressing the Power button to turn it on. Tried to open in Safe Mode by pressing F8 - no result, just the same black screen.
Has anyone any ideas how to get this computer up and running again? She was given no recovery disk when the computer was purchased new about 14 months ago.
No idea, but if she ever gets it started properly she may be able to create her own recovery disk set from the information on the 😧 drive if no one has created a set already using her machine or made too many changes on the 😧 drive. She should start either Windows Help and Support or HP Help and Support, tell it to search for recovery, and select Create recovery discs from the resulting list to get instructions. Note that the instructions are only supposed to work when using certain types of DVDs or CDs that can only be written once, and may require that they be HP brand.
If not, she can check if a friend has the same computer model, and if so, try their recovery disk set instead.
Another possibility is to go to http://www.hp.com/#Product on another computer, then adjust the upper right options to her country and language, then use it to search for her computer model number, and see if any of the resulting list of web links leads to a place where she can buy a set of recovery disks for that computer model from HP.
If she has to use the option on the recovery disks set to reinstall Vista, she may want to read any relevant instructions first in order to find the parts on how to preserve her data files by telling the recovery disk set to convert whatever's already on her hard drive into a directory tree that will include her data files, instead of erasing them, as it's likely to do if she does not use this option. This is unlikely to preserve the installation of any programs that did not come as part of Vista, but often includes the files needed to prove that she's already installed them on that computer and therefore has the privilege of installing them again. Also, she may want to look on the back and bottom of her computer to see if either of them gives the information on her computer model and serial number needed to tell the reinstallation procedure that it's the same computer.
Recovery disks for some other model of computer are unlikely to help.
