Battery check HP unable to access battery

Pavilion 17 Notebook
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi, For some reason my computer has started rapid battery drain and no longer shows a pop up telling my battery is running low, and has started just shutting down with no warning. I have tried doing a battery check but I just get a message telling me HP is unable to access the battery to check and recommending me to install the latest BIOS. I tried to do this but the installation pauses at 98% and just gives a message download failed.

This has all happened since I allowed microsoft help centre to remotely access my computer to remove a large pop up in the middle of my desktop asking me to upgrade to windows 10 which would not close and which I did not want to do
