After reapplication of the Sphinx update the Spectre has stayed at 100% for 24 hours then suddenly dropped to 94% at 36 hrs.  I've also left my Macbook Air unplugged checking its battery at the same times as the X360.  It's still at 100% after 36 hours.

This problem is unacceptable.  Unless HP releases an official fix without me sending in my laptop, I will be returning the X360 just before the return period ends.

HP needs to fix this problem - I hope other prospective buyers find out about this problem before purchasing this laptop.

Reporting back on amount of discharge with a partially full battery after applying Sphinx.  65% to 61% after a period of 48 hrs.

People keep trying this " fix " but no one really knows waht it does.

There are reports that it shows 100% charge, and all a sudden it drops to 94% when loading windows.. which is basically the same effect while the laptop was off and losing power .

I have spoken to some people and tech agents which suggested we "turn of usb charging" and fast boot ...

So basically they sold us features that we cant' make use of, because they didn't quality test it first?

Best bet would be to email or tweet everyone that gave this a glowing review and try to get some attention to the issue.

Maybe.. then maybe HP will listen.

I had a case manager, gave him the info to this forum, which they have more power than the common user, but i highly doubt anything will happen.

Well yeah, nobody knows what it does, but we know what it flashes, which is the Power Delivery firmware of the thunderbolt 3 port. I think that the drop from 100% to 94% is a battery protection feature, everybody knows that you shouldnt store a fully charged battery over time. Anyways, this has been an issue for months and i totaly agree that HP should have issued an official fix a long time ago.

Update:

Just spoke with a HP technician about the battery issue. He first tried to access the sphinx fix from hp's ftp server (they werent there) i told him i'd already applied the fix, and that it worked to some extent. Then i was told that it's a hw issue, or rather a battery firmware issue that only affect some users and that i'd have to send in the machine for a battery replacement. I asked if it was possible to just flash a new battery firmware, but that wasn't doable.

On a side note, «Anniversary update» will not be released for this machine, instead it will be upgraded directly to the next big windows update (creator update) scheduled for april.

Interesting.   I have had two batteries for my Spectre.   The original plus a replacement sent by HP.  Both had the drain issue.  And when I sent the PC back to HP the "fix" did reduced the battery drain to 0.1% per hour from over 0.5% per hour. I am not so sure a new battery is the fix....but you never know

As reported before, I have no idea what HP did besides "Windows 10 driver issues and Update firmware".  The did say the problem was duplicated during full diagnosis.

My suggestion is to continue to press HP for a solution.  I would also post polite messages on Facebook and Twitter.  I know they monitor Social media.

Ok, i specifically asked why a battery change would have any effect on the drain, since others also reported the issue after a battery replacement.  I was reassured that a battery replacement would fix the issue, still i dont feel really confident about it, also it seems theres no way to check what firmware my battery currently have, would be great to compare it to the replacement. It would truly suck to be without the computer for 10 days only to get it back slightly better instead of fixed.

Anyways, some good came out of it, since i got an «ETA» on the anniversary update.. or the lack of it. Atleast we know that it should be updated directly to «Creators Update» thats due in april.

I'll see what i end up doing, think im gonna give it some days (since i need a computer) and see if a proper update is released (was told they are working on it) if nothing pops up i have to decide if im going to go for the battery replacement or just return it for something else..

Just got off the phone with HP support.

The agent was able to identify Sphinx as HP's solution.  The agent was able to validate the names of the files, the steps in the instructions, as well as the version check (He was making sure I had applied the Sphinx fix and done it correctly).  Agent was not aware of any other fixes, nor any other public releases.

Additionally... agent advised to me this had been identified as an issue affecting devices manfactured in Nov and Dec only.

I was told yesterday by the "escalations team for the Americas" that a permanent fix should be released within 2 weeks.......and this fix is a BIOS update.  He said it has nothing to do with the battery (hardware).

Can anyone confirm that the sphinx patch fixes the issue with the kaby lake i7, 8gb, 256gb model from bestbuy?

Just bought this laptop and mostly love it but experiencing the 10-15% battery drain over 24hrs with power off. Bios 11, USB charging off, fast boot off in windows settings. Hoping the sphinx patch might help but most of those I have seen are running the 512gb model. Will try applying every update on the hp support page first.

Thanks
