This is a good suggestion but mine is running and it's set to start automatically. It was something I could see myself doing though.

I have a Probook 6570b 2.60Gz and the volume and brightness controls were working fine, but then for no reason the brightness control (fn+f10) stopped working - the volume control was still OK.

My resolution was simple - all I did was perform a Full Shutdown (Start PB and Shutdown) and start up again.

Hey presto..all working!!
