Cannot reach/access websites, websites timeout

Envy-t17
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I hope I have posted this in the right forum, apologies if I haven't. Here is the problem I'm having.

I bought a HP ENVY 17t just over a month ago. For the first week, 10 days, everything was fine, I have a good internet connection with TWC and the wireless modem/router I got was perfect.

Then I started to notice that I could not access some of my usual websites. I would type in the URL press enter then wait, and wait..... as opposed to just a day or so previously when I reached tte site instantly. Some of the sites would eventually, after a minute or so, some longer, appear, but then not completely, the graphics (pictures) were missing, links on the side of the pages were not there.

Initially I had thought that it was a problem with my internet connection so I called TWC. They checked at their end and then checked the modem/router, and pronounced that there was no problem with the internet connection. And sure enough, when I tried to download files from the office, I had no problems at all. I could access the servers and download large files without a problem, as fast as I did before the problem started.

I then called TP-Link. My Modem router is a TP-Link Archer CR700. I thought that there might be some kind of intermittent problem. They too checked everything with the modem, had me run some tests, and while the modem worked perfectly, I still could not access an ever increasing number of websites.

Just on a hunch I went online with my Samsung tablet, and I had absolutely no problems at all. I was able to surf, watch youtube videos, download files from the office, and generally stay online, without any slowing down the entire evening.

Here is a list of some of the sites I cannot reach when using the Envy-t17 (Windows 10):

bbc.com
bbc.co.uk
microsoft.com
google.com           In fact I can't reach any google related sites
youtube.com
gmail.com            I can't get access to my email except via my cell phone or tablet
yahoo.com
msn.com
espn.com
abc.com
msnbc.com
zdf.de               German news site
ard.de              German news site
HP.com            I'm using my travel laptop to type this up
presto.fm
last.fm
facebook.com
player.fm

Over 60 different web story and poetry sites

rugby.com
IPL Indian premier league, cricket website
wikipedia.com
Android store sites
samsung.com
windows forum sites
TED.com
TEDX.com
udemy.com
khan academy
rosettastone.com
space.com
skymap.com
nasa.gov
esa.org
quora.com
pocket.com
onedrive.com
dropbox.com
mediafire.com         cloud service like dropbox
opensubtities.org
allsubs.org
subtitlecube.com
thefreedictionary.com

The list goes on and on.

One of the first things I did when I got the laptop and had internet access, was to download Zone Alarm. I installed it after first getting rid of McAffee. I have been using ZA for almost 10 years and it has served me well, and never caused a problem. I have tired to access some of the above named sites, and others, after first switching OFF ZA, but there was no difference. Access to those sites was just as bad without ZA, as with.

I am at my wits end. I can't think of anything I might have installed that would cause this kind of problem. I use Firefox and Chrome, and with Zone Alarm covering the three bases - firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware - I don't use any other security software. I switched off MS firewall just before installing ZA, on the second day.

I have been using my travel laptop for the last couple of months, while travelling, but now that I'm back I want to get this problem fixed.

Thanks for your help.

Cannot reach/access websites, websites timeout

Hi @silkmaze,

Thank you for your inquiry.

What is your precise model of HP Envy 17T?

HP Notebook PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number, Serial Number or Product Number?

Did you try the suggestion that @ FlashRam1714  provided?

Re: Cannot reach/access websites

Did you upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10, if so did this occur after the upgrade?

If the issue remains, as it was working fine before you could try a restore back to before this occurred:

HP PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 10, 8)

Please let me know the results.

Thanks! If this helps you to reach a solution, please click the "Accept as Solution"button down below in this message. If you wish to say "thanks" for my effort to help, click the "Thumbs Up" to give me a Kudos. :catvery-happy

Cannot reach/access websites, websites timeout

Hi Sparkles1,

The product number of my T17 is M9X67AV.

I have checked in the device manger, there is no yellow triangle anywhere on the list.

I did not upgrade from Win 8 to 10, I bought the laptop new and during the ordering process I upgraded the default Windows 10 home to Windows 10 64bit.

The problem only occoured about a week or 10 after I got the laptop.

As to the suggestion from about the BIOS, according to the doc I read, if the BIOS has been corrupted then I should perform a BIOS restore. The BIOS has not been corrupted, there is also no BIOS update, according to the HP Support Assistant.

I do have a question about the Microsoft System Restore. If I do go ahead and carry it out, will the resorte include all the default software that I got with the laptop, the most important being the MS Office I bought with the laptop?

Thanks

HI  @silkmaze,

Thank you for the reply.

A "System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected". If you open the link there is a paragraph about  a system restore to help answer any questions.  If should not remove your program. If you should ever need to reinstall your Office software, as you purchased it, Microsoft should have a record and you would be able to download and reinstall it.  If you go to your Microsoft Account and look at your purchase history, it should be there.
