Chromebook 14 turns on but all I get is the Chrome Splash screen...which goes off and on.

Chromebook 14
Chrome OS

My chromebook shows nothing but the chrome splash screen....nothing happens...no damaged or missing o.s. screen, only the slash screen which then turns on and off.

I have no clue what to do since I can't get the recovery stuff on a thumb drive to do anything.  Is the machine dead?  Is there some way of manually resetting?

The last time this happened there was an update solution (http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.co.uk/):

Keep your device connected to the network and lid open for an hour or two to make sure the update is applied, then (after the device has been on for an hour or two) hold the power button down for 10 to 15 seconds.  The the sign-in screen should then function as before?

Thanks.....I have no way of knowing if the chromebook is connected to my wifi router since I can't see anything other than the splash screen.  I have left it on for hours and tried the on/off button with no change...thanks for the attempt to help me resolve the issue....I suspect that the bios, or whatever the chrome o.s. variety of that is called, is corrupt and I see no way of getting at that.

Then you probably have nothing to lose by trying a hard reset, instructions here:
