Computer only works with charger in although battery diagnostic test is 'OK'

HP Pavilion dv6-7000 Laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I just purchased a replacement battery for my HP Pavilion dv6-7000 laptop to replace my older one. The replacement worked fine for about a week, and now when I have this battery plugged in the computer only works when the charger is plugged into the computer. When the charger is pugged in, the computer does recognize the battery and says that it is fully charged, but when the charger is unplugged the computer dies as if I had removed the battery (or the battery was not plugged in).

I have run multiple diagnostic tests such as that in the HP Support Assistant which says that the battery is OK, and the computer can still boot up with the original battery (which just has a decreased capacity). So I do not believe that this is a problem with the computer, but rather with the battery.

How can I determine the problem with this new battery and get it to work again?

Computer only works with charger in although battery diagnostic test is 'OK'

Hi @noahswimmer,

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums! 🙂 Good day. 🙂  I understand that you are looking for assistance regarding battery issues on your computer, where the new battery does not hold any charge. It will be a genuine pleasure to assist you here. 🙂

A commendable job was done by diagnosing the issue and troubleshooting correctly, before posting your question in the HP forums. 🙂  It is always a great pleasure to work with tech-savvy d customers like you.  🙂 Kudos to you for that. We definitely value your relationship with HP tremendously. We appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

First off, we need to diagnose the issue correctly and establish whether it is hardware or software related.

Going by the troubleshooting that you’ve done it could be an issue with the new battery and you could get a replacement battery if the battery is under warranty. (accessory being under warranty).

Please perform a few steps to isolate the issue

Please perform a hard reset first. Link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768

Then please run F2 diagnostics for the battery from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03467259

Please run diagnostics from component tests on the batter and make a note of any failure code for a failed component that may get displayed.

Later please check these links out for further assistance:

Link 2: for improving battery performance: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01297640

If it still does not work and the new battery does not hold any charge, please contact HP phone support to get the battery replaced. If it is under warranty then it will get replaced. Link for phone support: http://hp.com/contacthp

Please select the country and type the product# of the computer and follow the on-screen instructions. If you have purchased the battery it directly from HP shopping within a 30-day return window, then you could return the battery for a new replacement. Link for HP shopping: http://store.hp.com

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂
