HP Pavilion Notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I desperately need someones help as I am a law student with an assignment due monday and my laptop wont start. I left it on in my room and went out for a while and when i came back it was on a constant loop of trying to automatically repair and then would show a blue error message stopcode of either FAT FILE SYSTEM or NTFS FILE SYSTEM. Iv'e tried everything that I can think of and nothing is working. pressing ctrl + f8 +f11 does nothing. when I press f11 nothing happens and the loop continues. I also cannot seem to get to a command prompt menu. I really just want to restor the computer to an earlier date or get it to work...Please can you help...

Hello @Tazzikinz

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

Could you confirm you run Windows 10 ?  If yes, was it a clean installation or you previously ran older Windows version and upgraded to Win 10 ?  What was your previous Windows ?

Your problem is known as Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). BSOD is kind of Windows self-protection feature. If you received a blue screen error, or stop code, the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from data loss.

A hardware device, its driver, or related software might have caused this error. What you describe could happen because of incompatible with Windows driver (most often) or because of hardware issue (rarely).

I guess your Windows updated itself automatically and the update caused the issue

or there is some hardware problem.

In order to troubleshoot, I would need some specific information.

Please, check the official HP article about such issues >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04593971

Perform specifically step 2 and step 5 as diagnostic steps]. Post the results of the hardware checks and the details of the message BSOD that appears.

Follow step 4 to use "System Restore". It will undo any recent changes that might be causing the blue screen error, including changing your settings and uninstalling recently installed software applications, or Windows Updates.

Let me know if this helps. Looking forward to your update.

I think my laptop had windows 10 already.

I cannot perform step 2 or 4 as my F11 does not take me to the troubleshoot page.

I did perform an extensive diagnostic test  (System E) and it failed on Hard drive 1 - Primary HDD Bay. Failure ID: PG8BXR-8838JD-MFPX6J-60U903.

Is there another way to get to the recovery menu? I also tried pressing escape on starup and in the menu clicked f11 and nothing happened- just took me back to the loop.

Hi @Tazzikinz

Thank you for your reply.

You cannot load F11 recovery options because the recovery partition is stored locally on the hard disk drive. However, the code you provided points to faulty hard disk drive (HDD).

PC cannot boot not because of a software (Windows) problem but due to hard disk failure

Since this is faulty HDD, you will probably not be able to recover your files and your files might be gone/inaccessible.

Based on the code you provided  I can see that your PC should still have active warranty - please contact HP Support and inform them. They will work with you about the way to replace the faulty component for free.

Here are some instructions which can help you try to access the data stored on the HDD. As the HDD is reported faulty - there is no guarantee it will work but you could try to save some of your files:

You will need :

- either 1 empty/blank USB thumb drive   OR  1 empty/blank DVD disk

- Linux based operating system - free to download - e.g. Ubuntu or Linux Mint

You can directly download Ubuntu Desktop from Ubuntu's web site:

Download the x64 ISO > https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Once ready, you need to write the ISO to make a bootable media (e.g. bootable DVD or USB drive). Here is how:

How to create bootable ISO on USB device >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

or

How to write ISO to DVD >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows

When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:

* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled  (if applicable for your model)

* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled (if applicable for your model)

* Save the UEFI/BIOS changes.

(if applicable for your model) Details>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226

Eventually, please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Ubuntu USB thumdrive or the Ubuntu DVD prepared previously

Power on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

Choose F9 to open Boot options (or select the respective F option for boot menu) . Select the thumb drive or the DVD as a bootable device to boot from.

Follow the on-screen instructions to run Ubuntu (not install it but try it).

Ubuntu should load. You can try to see if it will be able to mount your existing HDD. If possible, you may be able to browse your files and copy what is necessary to a online Cloud storage service or to another device.

Hope this helps.
