DV1610TN 4 Beeps error

Hi

I have a Pavilion DV1610tn that just emits 4 beeps on power up.  The 4 beeps are the same length.  There is no display activity at all.

After the beeps all the blue lights of the power button and the power LED on the front flas on and off.  I suspect it is a RAM issue but

have checked both 256Mb modules in another Laptop and that boots fine and runs windows with no issues.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I am not worried about disassembly if necessary but wanted to see if any one alse had

any idea before I stripped it down.

Many thanks

Ian

Before you strip it down check this HP webpage to see if your laptop is part affected laptops which fall under the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement.

Re: DV1610TN 4 Beeps error

The Beeps and the fashing leds are BIOS messages. Do you know which version BIOS is installed in your system?

Re: DV1610TN 4 Beeps error

Dear Erico

Sadly I cannot determine which version of BIOS is on the laptop as I have no display.  I cannot find any information on the error beeps anywhere.

Many thanks

Have you already tried reseating the memory Module(s) ? That is a must do. IT only takes a small philips screwdriver and somem patience to open the memory module cover.

Here are two webpages with information on BIOS beep codes. The first one is from HP. The second one  is from another forum.  You are going to have to listen and count the beeps to make sense out of the message the BIOS is giving you.

Re: DV1610TN 4 Beeps error

POST beeps on a laptop are almost always either bad memory or a bad video chip on the motherboard.

Re: DV1610TN 4 Beeps error

Take out one memory stick and see if it will boot to Windows. If it doesn't then try the other one.

Re: DV1610TN 4 Beeps error

Hi

Many thanks again for your continued support.

According to the HP help "Four series of beeps indicate a fatal error, a problem exists which prevents the computer from starting. "

So I guess the motherbaord has failed somehow. As I said I tried the 2 256Mb modules in another DV167ea Pavilion that I have and they worked fine in that machine. I also tried other known good RAM in the failing DV1610tn, all to no avail.

Best wishes

Re: DV1610TN 4 Beeps error

Dear Erico

I tries reseating the memory and trying it another Laptop.  Both memory modules OK in another laptop.  I tried each module on its own in the DV1910TN as well.

Many thanks
