Disappearing Ethernet Adaptor?

Hi all,

I am having a problem with my HP Pavilion dv6-2113tx. If I have no ethernet cable plugged in, my computer DOES NOT display the network adaptor in network connections neither does it display in Device Manager. But when I do plug the ethernet cable in, the controller suddenly appears. Also sometimes even though I have the ethernet cable plugged in, it still does not show up so I have to reboot with the ethernet cable plugged in. Even if I reboot with no ethernet cable plugged in, the network adaptor still doesn't display? I think my network adaptor is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and im pretty sure that I have the latest driver for it too.

Also I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Bit.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Dean.S

Re: Disappearing Ethernet Adaptor?

SOLVED!

The dissapearing wired ethernet adaptor is due to a bios setting LAN Power saving [Enabled]

Hit F10 on boot up I think... if not it'll be either [esc] or [F2] or [delete] or [F10]?  Can't remember, even though I only just fixed this 15mins ago lol...

Disable the powersaving for the LAN and the wired ethernet adaptor will show up in device manager and network adaptors regardless of a working LAN cable fitted.

Also while your there, you can disable the media key thing and return your F1-F12 keys back to normal aswell.

Re: Disappearing Ethernet Adaptor?

Do you see the network adapter icon on the task bar (lower right corner)?  You can set your task bar up to show all icons and not just the active icons. Right mouse click on the task bar ---> properties ---> customize and check th box at the bottom of the page.

Did you install the lastest ethernet driver of the manufacturer's web site?  You might also check your Power Options or in Device Manager to see if the save power box is checked for the network adapter when not connected.

Re: Disappearing Ethernet Adaptor?

Hi,

No, it has nothing to do with the icons. I checked the HP website and there are no updates for my driver. Also the only power option is to allow the computer to turn off the device once the computer is in standby. I have tried looking on Realtek's website but I have no clue what model no. is mine?

Thanks,

Dean.S

Re: Disappearing Ethernet Adaptor?

Hi Ramjet,

Thanks for your reply! It worked! I couldn't believe that all this time the option was right in front of me!! I thought it was a driver installation problem, but instead it was just a bios option.

Thanks again,

Dean.S
