Envy 13 extremely loud fan noise

HP Recommended
Envy 13-D053SA
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I've just got an HP Envy 13-D053SA, which is the i7/FHD/256GBSSD model. The fan runs loudly whenever the laptop is on. As soon as I start to do anything -- even light web browsing - it gets louder, to the point where it's not really background noise any more.

I've updated the BIOS, since there was an update available and I thought that might help. While it was installing the fan ran unbelievably loudly, to the point of not really sounding safe for the hardware. I'm yet to try any actually intensive uses yet but so far it's not looking good.

Why is the laptop doing this? Is there anything I can do about it? One of the reasons I bought this laptop was for its higher processor power relative to some other ultrabooks, but if you can't actually use the laptop seriously without the fan running so loudly, it's not really any use.
