HP OMEN 15 2016 CPU i5 6300HQ upgradeable to i7 6700HQ?

HP Recommended

hi all

I've had a couple of HP notebooks that I had to return because of poor gaming performance, they were i5 7200U and i7 7500U. They were both with integraded intel graphics and were falling short of my expectations.

Both had awesone CPU though, windows 10 was amazing on them.

Now I have bought an HP OMEN 2016, going by benchmark tests I didnt think much of going back to 6th Gen Skylake with i5 6300HQ on this laptop, especially since it came with a decent Nvidia 965M 4 GB graphics card

But now, I see the processor use of this machine spikes and even though I get a very high framerate (hovering around 60 or more) the gameplay is very jerky. The reason is CPU bottleneck, I never thought 6300HQ would be a bottleneck but it certainly is on specific games. (Forza Apex being one)

In general performance on windows 10 is also a downgrade, I kind of rue not having the 7th gen (even though they are both U series and under powered they both perform a generation better in my personal experience)

So all this story apart, my question is - can I upgrade CPU on this laptop to i7 6700 HQ? If the mother board supports the same and the current CPU can come off it?

Please let me know! Would be highly appreciated.

thanks

Hi,

Looks like CPU is soldered to the motherboard because you have to buy motherboard with CPU as shown on the following list (last numbers are part numbers):

System board
Intel i7-6700HQ system board, 950M, 2 GB, with a Windows operating system 856673-601
Intel 2GB i5-6300HQ system board, 950M, 2 GB, with a Windows operating system 856674-601
Intel i3-6100H system board, 950M, 2 GB, with a Windows operating system 856675-601
Intel i7-6700HQ system board, 960M, 2 GB, with a Windows operating system 856676-601
Intel i5-6300HQ system board, 960M, 2 GB, with a Windows operating system 856677-601
Intel i7-6700HQ system board, 960M, 2 GB, with a Windows operating system 856678-601
Intel i5-6300HQ system board, 960M, 2 GB, with a Windows operating system 856679-601
Intel i7-6700HQ system board, 965M, 4 GB, with a Windows operating system 859750-601
Intel i5-6300HQ system board, 965M, 4 GB, with a Windows operating system 859751-601

More information: Second manual of the following link:

        http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/OMEN-15-by-HP-Laptop-PC/10862325/model/11991765/manuals

This would be a very, very, very expensive upgrade.

Regards.
