HP Pavilion Laptop - Machine Check Error on Linux when Waking from Suspend

I've noticed a machine check error raised everytime I wake the laptop from suspend to RAM.  I suggests an error with the CPU cache.  After posing a question on the Fedora forums, it was suggested that it could be an EFI BIOS or DSDT issue.  The details from the log are:-

Is this a known issue or a faulty (four month old) laptop?  As the errors only show up during the waking process I'd suggest that is a bug.

Any thoughts?

HP Pavilion Laptop - Machine Check Error on Linux when Waking from Suspend

Hello gareththered,

Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

I understand you are experiencing a Machine Check Error on your Linux operating system when trying to wake from Suspend mode. I will do what I can to assist you!

Please note that HP doesn't condone Linux on our computers, and you would receive more exposure by posting this issue on the Linux forums. However, I do know a little about Linux. Apparently, this can be caused by a "bug". You can locate a potential fix here: Ubuntu freezes/crash after wake when upgraded to 13.10

Thanks again for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Mario

HP Pavilion Laptop - Machine Check Error on Linux when Waking from Suspend

Hi,

Thanks for your response.  Unfortunately, the suggestions in the linked page didn't make a difference.

I've arrived here from Linux forums, who suggested that it was a bug in HP's side of things.  I was originally tempted to report the issue to the kernel developers, but was informed that they would reject it as it has 'Hardware event. This is not a software error.' within it.

However, I'm not convinced it's a hardware error as it only happens when the laptop wakes from suspend-to-RAM.  As I see it, there is either a bug in the laptop's DSDT (or similar) or a bug in the kernel.  Cynically, I believe HP will say it's the kernel, while kernel devs will say it's DSDT 😉

I'm experiencing a similar problem with a Lenovo Yoga 2 pro.

I too suspect it is a ACPI table bug (pure speculation).

You can look at and join in in my Fedora bugzilla entry https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1082211
