When they called they took control of my computer they said I had virus from another country.  They told me to do a system recovery and to save to DVD.   The disk did not save my formation and everything was lost of my computer.  I purchased the monthly HP packet.  The phone # they use is 800-680-1438.  Is this real or phony.  I cannot use my laptop nor every want to use it because they have my serial #.   I have been HP customer for my life and now I feel I must go to Apple.

Hi:

Unfortunately, you have been scammed.

No one from HP, Microsoft or any other reputable PC company will call you out of the blue and tell you there is a problem with your PC, or that your PC has a virus, etc.

These scammers can be very clever--some knowing your name, phone number and even your PC's model and serial number, making it a bit difficult to tell the difference between a legitimate call and a scam.

But my 2nd sentence applies under any circumstance.

HP is asking customers that have been contacted by folks claiming to be from HP to submit the info to HP for further investigation.
