Hi,

Your laptop came with Windows 8 64 bit.

If you've created recovery discs(media) already. This contains your factory set operating system, drivers, additional softwares.

Perform factory reset after replacement of HDD:

Get at least 256gb capacity HDD for recovery media to work successfully.

Thank you.  A local computer repair shop told me that the recovery disks would not work.  Need a copy of the operating system.   I will go back today and discuss it with him.

Hi,

Recovery discs will work in new HDD if it is at least 160gb capacity.

If you need a windows installation media, you can run Microsoft windows media creation tool to create a UEFI bootable USB yourself.

If you've already activated Windows 10 previously before HDD crashed, you can make Windows 10 USB and clean install it.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

Additional drivers: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-17-Notebook-PC-series/5375409/model/6422...

Else you can make Windows 8.1 USB and clean install this. Option 1:

Additional drivers: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-17-Notebook-PC-series/5375409/model/6422...

Either way after installation Windows will get automatically activated through Microsoft servers while connected to internet.
