Manual said remove "service door". I don't see one. JB HiFi said just do it yourself. What will happen to warranty if I procede and take laptop apart?

Hi:

 

The service door is basically the whole bottom of the PC which slides open.

 

You need to refer to chapter 4, page 49 to open the service door.

Look at the picture. You slide a latch (#1) and then at the same time you move the latch you press down on the "service door" with your other hand, and slide the whole bottom toward the front of the PC.

 

You will not void the warranty by replacing the memory if you follow the proper procedures of removing the battery and A/C power, and you don't break anything--like the service door.

Upgrading the memory by a notebook's owner is allowable and does not violate the warranty.  

 

I hope that the following image makes it clearer to you that the service door is most of the external external cover of your notebook.

 

It is not a small removeable panel (or door) that exists on most notebooks that you are probably expecting to find.

Memory upgrade info can be found in chapter 1 on page 2.

 

Remember that you must have a 64 bit operating system installed if you install more than 4 GB of memory in order for the OS to recognize and use it.

Thanks for looking at the query, but I'm not having any luck installing 8gb. Can you suggest a fix?

 

My system can accept 8gb but it doesn't seem to recognise it, or there is some other problem.

I get a black screen with two 4gb modules installed.

It will boot normally with 2gb in one slot and 4gb in the other. It doesn't matter which slot the modules are in; the system boots okay. However, it doesn't seem to run 6gb.

 

My system specs are:

 

HP Pavilion dm1-4016au
CPU AMD e-450 with Radeon HD Graphics, Revision ON-CO
OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Mainboard HP 3387
BIOS HP f.16
RAM Memory DDR 3 1333mhz

 

With one module installed, system information says:
Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    6.00 GB
Total Physical Memory    1.60 GB
Available Physical Memory    905 MB
Total Virtual Memory    3.21 GB
Available Virtual Memory    2.04 GB
Page File Space    1.60 GB

Hi:

 

That is very interesting.  Are you getting PC3-10600 memory and not PC3-10660 or PC3-10666?

 

I often see posts from folks that install memory coded with those specs not working.

 

What I would do is to test each of those 4 GB chips and see if they both read 6 GB or if one of the 4 GB chips gives a black screen. Maybe just one of the 4 GB chips is bad?

 

Now as to the low memory reporting. Your notebook comes with a 64 bit OS, so that isn't the problem.

 

There is one trick that I know of that could be causing the issue and if that isn't it, then I have no clue why your memory is being reported so low.

 

Do this:

 

Run 'msconfig', go to 'boot' tab, click 'advanced options', and uncheck 'maximum memory', if it is checked.

 

After the restart, your PC should now show more usable memory.
