HP 17-p121wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Manufacturer refurbished laptop is missing keystrokes entered on the built-in keyboard when typing at a fast rate.  This happens apparently at random - it is not tied to any particular key.  One, two or three keystrokes may be missed before new keystrokes are displayed on the screen.

The problem is not application-dependent - it occurs in word processors, webmail, etc.

Tried uninstalling the driver in Device Manager and rebooting - did not fix the problem.

Now here's the fun part - the problem does not occur when using a USB wired keyboard.

Do I need to replace the keyboard?  Any other suggestions?  Thanks!

Hi there @InfoJunkies

Welcome to the HP Support Community where you can ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community!

I understand that you are having an issue with the Keyboard keys on your HP 17-p121wm Notebook PC

  • Have you tried going into Safe Mode to see if the problems persist in there?
  • Have you tried Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset?
  • Do you receive any error messages?
  • What keys are not working? Is there a pattern?
  • Have you done a hardware test?
  • Have you updated all of your drivers?

Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps:

  • Start
  • Search for Device Manager
  • Open Device Manager from the Search results.
  • Click View
  • Show Hidden Devices.
  • Click the arrow next to Keyboards.
  • Right-click the keyboard device name.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.
  • Restart the notebook twice.

I found a troubleshooting document for you to try called Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting

Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating.

Another option for you may be to Restore to a Previous Point before this happened to you. It should put it back without losing anything.

To use System Restore in Windows 10:

  • Go to the Search
  • Type Control Panel
  • Click Control Panel
  • Click System
  • Click System Protection
  • Click System Protection Tab
  • Click System Restore
  • Click Next
  • Choose "Choose a different Restore point"
  • Click Next
  • A box that says "Restore your computer to the state it was in before the selected event" will pop up
  • Choose the event
  • Click Next
  • Click Finish
  • Click Yes to Confirm

When the System Restore is finished, you will get a pop up that says it has been completed.
