Latitude E6400 RAM Upgrade

E6400
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)
Hi My E6400 has only 2GB of RAM is not nearly enough for Win 10. My questions: Do both RAM slots have to be filled? Do both RAM Chips have to be the same value? Is there a RAM limit for this model, using 32bit Win 10? Thanks

Hi

The better matched the memory is, then the better the performance, from energy usage to throughput.

32 OS have a 4GB limit on memory, so therefore PAE is implemented to overcome this barrier, BUT you may not have that capability implemented.

So you can try Piriform SPECCY to see what it reports as your memory, for instance I get this...

RAM
        Memory slots
            Total memory slots    2
            Used memory slots    1

Which maybe more than you expected, but the early part is useful.  The latter bit may help you to find comparable, SAMSUNG etc.

Latitude E6400 RAM Upgrade

Thanks.
So from that I can upgrade to either one 4gb chip or two 2gb chips?

Cheers

Hi:

Run the free Crucial memory scan tool and it will report how much and what kind of memory your notebook can run.

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/systemscanner

Your notebook's memory will run better if you install 2 x 2 GB of memory vice 1 x 4 GB of memory.

That is because the 2 x 2 runs in DDR (Dual Data Rate) mode.

Now, if your notebook can take 8 GB of memory, you may as well max it out to 2 x 4 GB and be done with it.

That advice depends on the cost of the memory and your budget.

Hi

I would suggest 2 x 2 GB, as you already have 1 and then only need to buy 1 more, as close as you can to the existing one.

However Paul gives good advice in the once and for all step, which I would do as I run 64 bit OS's other than Microsoft.

There is a 4 GB limit and after the upgrade you may only see 3.3 GB as usable / available, without PAE you wont be able to utilise the other 4+ GB.

Yes, I overlooked that fact that you are running a 32 bit operating system which means that the maximum amount of memory that windows 10 32 bit can see and use is only 4 GB.

If you plan on keeping W10 at 32 bit, then you have to stick with 2 x 2 GB of memory.

If you want to install W10 64 bit then you would have to do a clean install.

Not sure if you can switch from W10 32 to W10 64 for free but you can always try it and if it doesn't, just reinstall W10 32 bit.

You can make either installation media from the link below...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

To install W10 64 bit, you would have to boot from the installation media and select the 'I don't have product key' option.

Hopefully it will activate because Microsoft has a record of the PC previously being upgraded to W10.
