Laptop Envy - m6-n012DX
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

1 Can't access "Legacy" selections in BIOS.

2 My Samsung USB optical drive is not recognized by this computer. It's ok on my other computers.

3 Can't select the optical drive as boot drive.

        How can I resolve this?

  Thanks

1-Immediately after powering on are you tapping the F9 key to select boot device?

2-If F9 does not allow selecting USB- follow these directions to Disable Secure Boot.

That solution was not appropriate.

I don't want to recover anything or reinstall windows.

Just want it to recognize my optical drive and boot from it.

@CherylG 's advice was actually spot on. You do the same thing to boot from the usb optical drive as you would to use that drive to install Windows. What kind of disk are you trying to boot if it is not Windows?

This is what I get when I tap F9

Any other info let me know

You are not getting it in time. Try tapping esc instead and see if you get a menu with F9 and F10 options.

I am getting it ontime.

I can select system config then Boot Options.

Then I select UEFI CD/DVD (it's on top).

The Legacy selections are not active.

What the heck is UEFI anyway?

So, then I get the screen that I showed you in the previous reply.

If I take this to Best Buy, it will cost me about $100.00

HP makes better printers than computers. Too proprietary.

No it is just that computers have gotten hella more complex in the last 3 or 4 years. UEFI is a new basic system for computers and has replaced BIOS or at least supplemented BIOS and you can't expect to effectively work on any computers now unless you understand it. If you want to get rid of the UEFI boot options tap esc as you power up, get into the congfiguration menu (F10) and disable secure/uefi boot and enable legacy boot.

HP Recommended

I did as directed

Legacy Options are enabled. Selected F10.

It went back to Boot Manager with the image that I had enclosed.

Wipe Drive disc is in the external CD/DVD Drive. ( Want to totally "wipe out" the internal HDD.)

Still doesn't work.
