HP Pavilion TouchSmart
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Speakers won't turn off when headset is plugged in.

I have recently installed Windows 10 update but I think the problem may be present even before the update.

Hi @Snehansh,

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums! I am glad to help you with the sound issues that you are facing with the Pavilion computer.

First, try the below-mentioned steps to try and fix the issue:

  • Go into Control Panel, then Sound.
  • Look for the Recording tab.
  • Select your microphone/headset as the default device, and press OK.

If you still face the same issue, then proceed with the steps below:

  • Go to device manager (You can give a right click on windows logo on bottom left corner of your screen and select device manager from the list)
  • Now maximize the “Sound, video and game controllers” from the list. You will see the audio driver. Then give a right click on the audio driver and choose “Update Driver Software” option.
  • Choose the option which says “Search automatically for updated driver software”. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the current drivers.
  • Once done, restart the computer and check the sound.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hi @Snehansh,

Thanks for getting back after trying the steps. Lets try the steps from below and check if it helps.

Remove the headphones. Right click the sound icon bottom right and select playback devices. With the playback properties window still open plug in your earphones and a new item should show up. It might show up as Speakers with gray information underneath. Click on it and make default. Should now disable your speakers.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

None of the solutions worked. I cannot find my headphones as a separate icon in the playback panel.
