i figured out what was wrong. Power save mode was on which disabled the quick launch keys. I changed it by entering the settings from the audio icon in taskbar.

I bought a HP Pavilion dv6 XD622EA about 6 months ago and the volume control shortcut keys stopped working yesterday. All the other shortcut keys work fine, apart from the increase and decrease volume buttons (the mute button also works). I have tried reinstalling the drivers that were suggested, but they have not fixed the problem. Any suggestions?

I purchased an HP Probook 4545s and have the same problem with the keyboard sound buttons not working. I tried to download the first "softpaq" download you suggested, but it gives me an error. It must not apply for my window 7 or model of laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Any suggestions DavidPK ??

For Windows 8.1 go to the search bar on the right side of the screen and type in "volume". From the search results, choose Windows Mobility Center. In the window that appears, there should be a heading that says "Customized by Dell Inc.". Underneath that heading there should be three options. Look at the one that says "Function Key Row". At the bottom of the box it should say Function Key Behavior. Right above that, there should be a drop down menu. If your volume keys are not working, then the selection probably reads "Function Key". To make your volume keys work, change the selection to "Multimedia Key" from the drop down menu. Test the volume keys, and they should work now.
