Hi, my windows update is stuck on never check for updates. I can't change it even though I am the system administrator, it's saying some aspects are controlled by the system adminstrator. I don't understand why I can't chnage it because that's me. Does anyone know how to help? Please 🙂

Hi @elise_hg

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome !

This issue appears because there is a registry entry in your >Windows Registry< that configured Windows Update this way.

This entry can be created manually, could have been created by a program that configures WU, could have appeared because of virus/malware or could appear if your PC is part of corporate network/domain/due to company policies.

This article here >> http://www.askvg.com/how-to-change-windows-update-settings-when-managed-or-disabled-by-system-admini... explains in details how to fix the issue and is valid for Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10

If infected by malware or if the PC is part of corporate network, the issue cannot be fixed easily (a.k.a. could be policy or the threat may need removal first)

Basically, you need to open Windows Registry Editor (regedit) , scroll down to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
and/or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

and erase all entries other than the "Default" one

Close regedit eventually and the issue should be solved immediately or after PC restart.

If you are not sure why this happened, a virus/malware check would also be recommended.

Scan/check your PC with these free apps:

Sophos HitmanPro > https://www.hitmanpro.com/en-us/hmp.aspx

ESET Online Scanner > https://www.eset.com/int/home/online-scanner/

Hope this helps. Let me know if this solves your problem.
