encountered unexpected error when going to factory reset

i purchased this laptop from a friend, and wanted to factory reset it.
when i did this i got this screen
" the computer restarted unexpectedley or encountered an unexpected error. windows installation caannot proceed. to install Windows, click "OK
to restart the computer and then restart installation"
i have done this numerous times and it keeps coming back to this screen.
this laptop didnt come w. a cd disc drive and no disc.
how do i get this working again?
