No at that time when that laptop was made there was a BIOS whitelist which means only the HP approved and distributed wireless cards could be used. This is the list of approved cards from the Manual:
Integrated wireless local area network (WLAN) options by way of wirelessmodule:
Intel PRO Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g and 802.11b/gBroadcom 802.11a/b/gAtheros AR2425 WLAN b/g
None of these is an "N" adapter so your laptop cannot work with an "N" adapter.
