I have an hp pavilion split x2 13 that quit working i ran diagnostics and short dst failed i looked it up and it says my hard drive is bad. i mangaed to get it apart and the hard drive out. Its a WD Black 500GB 8GB NAND ultra slim tablet version the model number isWD5000M21K i found a few used replacements on ebay and some new on other websites. my question is can i uprgare this? i found a WD black 500GB 16GB NAND model number WD5000M22K hard drive thats also the ultra slim tablet version it looks the same the plug is the same would this work and upgrad my ram from 8 to 16 GB?

generally yes. But if the budget will accommodate, what you really want is a pure SSD or solid state drive....about $123 for a 500 gig SSD on sale:

I am not there to supervise the installation so I cannot be 100% sure of anything but there is absolutely no reason it will not. There is nothing physically mechanically or electronically incompatible about the one you want to buy.

also some of the new hard drives im looking at on ebay say "Item needs to be initialized first and then create partitions, only after which the Operating System can be installed to use the Hard Drive to its full capacity." whats that mean i have to put windows on it myself how do i do that? would i be better off buying a used tested one so i can just plug in and go? say i do buy a new one and have to do that could you explaine to me the steps after i get my hard drive installed to get my computer up and running?

Yeah the hybrid drives actually require a sotware app like a driver to work properly. I don't like them. I would either use a 7200 rpm straight old school mechanical hard drive or a solid state drive. If you get the hybrid drive follow the instructions to the letter is all I can say.
