1040G3

We deploy 1040G3 laptops and one of my users would like to upgrade from the 9470 to the 1040G3 - he wants to use three monitors.  Any challenges to this?

Yes.

If you use the Ultra Slim (http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-2013-ultraslim-docking-station) you will have 4 USB 3.0 ports (3 USB 3.0 ports, 1 Charging port); 1 RJ-45 (network) jack; 2 DisplayPort 1.2; 1 VGA port; 1 Line-in jack; 1 Line-out jack.  This will allow you to attach 3 monitors.  Keep in mind you will need to create a profile that turns off the internal monitor when you are docked.

I also suggest you update the firmware of your dock to 2.33

This is the current Firmware for the docking station and corrects some issues with connecting multiple monitors.
