Have you looked inside the battery compartment? Sometimes the Key Code sticker is in there. Other than that, you can try to find HP Restore disks which do not require activation. Without a Key Code you just cannot legally activate Windows 7.

This is a common problem on dead drives, we get a lot, probably more 10 a week with this issue, we oem activate them, basically adding the cert & oem key to your new install, you already have the correct bios 2.1 tables so then on reboot it will check & activate correctly .

@Mista B I am not sure anybody really can understand what you are trying to say. I opened the link you gave and it refers to the old Microsoft Digital River .iso downloads which Microsoft no longer offers. The OP has the Windows 7 disk, just needs a Key Code (5 x 5) to activate. On Windows 7 it is not embedded in the BIOS. If you can share some way to do that without a 5 x 5 Key Code please share in simple language.

the thread was initially for 7 iso files which actually are still working as not on DR server.

Thread also contains advise on creating usb or cd boot sticks/discs & help on activating via oem cert & oem key .

once you lost your sticker which basically is a retail key your only option unless purchase new key is to go for same files as in oem activation. on working old drive they can be extracted, when dead drive matching ones for pc make & windows version are used .
