laptop product info is missing or invalid. Help please.

Upon startup my laptop goes to a black screen and says product information missing or invalid on system board. The following info is missing  System  board (00A)- product name, product serial number, product number.  press enter to continue.  I press enter and it boots up.  What is this message and what do I need to do to  correct it?

This happens when it's sent in to HP for repair and the technician has forgotten to reenter this information. The BIOS chip is missing these things.

Other things that cause this are installing a preprogrammed BIOS chip or a bad BIOS flash.

The only way to fix this is to send it to the nearest HP authorized repair depot where they can enter the missing information.

The utility for this is not available to the general public.

Did you replace the system board ?

I did not replace the motherboard.  I was doing a 3rd party disk defrag that went bad, (the system went to sleep while this was going on).  How that could effect settings in BIOS is beyond me.  Is there anything I can do to fix this myself.  Otherwise I can just live with it.  Please advise.

If you enter the BIOS and the information in there is missing or changed (just numbers from 0 to 9), then there is nothing you can do about it.

It has to be sent into HP for them to fix this.

How old is the laptop ?

What was the 3rd party disc defrag. program ?

If it's out of warranty, HP may still fix this for nothing because it realy should not have happend.

Do you want me to try and help getting a hold of HP ?
