Solved!

no sound from docking station line out

HP Elitebook 8540W, HP Docking Station VB043AA#ABA, Windows 7 64-bit; audio out works fine from laptop internal speakers and laptop headphone jack; when I plug speaker cord into line-out on docking station, the sound continues to come from the internal speakers; when I right-click speaker icon and select "playback devices" I see "Speakers / HP" and "Headphones (RTC)" but I don't see any option to switch to docking station lineout.

problem solved! apparently the labels (and the docking station documentation) are BACKWARDS! the jack with the arrow pointing TOWARD the hole is the LINE-OUT. I can only assume the other jack would be line-in but I haven't tested it. somebody fell asleep for a while on the assembly line because my coworkers with the same dock have the same issue. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't "arrow pointing away from jack" = "line out" = "speaker jack"?

Who would have thought? I swapped the connections and now the audio works from the docking station. Definitely a mislabel problem. Thanks.
