Hi Paul,

Maybe you can help. Ive looked for days for a solution.

I have an old compaq presario v5000 with windows XP

Just bought a wireless hotspot from us cellular. Also bought a new dell laptop ( everything works fine )

my old presario however wont connect to the new 'n' routers.

looked up my network adapters under device manager.

Broadcom 802.11/b/g WLAN

Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

Ive messed with the WPA WEP settings for days because 30,000 people online think this is all you do..

Im not sure how to look up any more info you might need. Just let me know if i can help you- help me . thanks

Hi:

I have provided the link below to the final XP driver which works for most Broadcom cards.

If this one doesn't get your card to work with the router (or your card is too old for this driver), then abandon all hope, and buy an external USB wireless adapter.

Thanks for your quick reply. I am going to try this right away.

Im guessing I need to get online with my friends router that works with the old laptop in order to download it.

Or is there a way I can with this one and transfer the file with a flash card or something?

Hi:

You can certainly do the latter of your two suggestions--download to the computer you are using now, and copy the file to a USB flash drive or burn it to a CD. Use that to install on the PC that can't connect to the internet.

Remember what I wrote in my PM to you...you have to have XP SP3 installed in order for any wireless card to work with WPA2-Personal AES security.

If you are unsure if you have XP SP3 installed, follow the info below to confirm.

  • Right-click on My Computer and click Properties to open the System Properties window. (Your My Computer icon may be in the Start menu or on the desktop.)
  • Click the General tab to see the operating system version information.

Ok, i have the service pack 2, so I am going to download that file, save it to a flash drive and put that on my old one.

Then i'll do the same with your link. Thanks again, i'll let you know how it works out.

Hi:

That is your major issue then.

Here is the link to the standalone SP3 download. Ignore the part about network installation and IT professionals.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

Install that first then see if the driver I posted works. Between the 2, you should be good to go.

With SP3, you will now have an option to select WPA2 where you currently cannot.

I downloaded the new service pack 3, transfered it to the old computer, and installed it fine.

Did the same for the link you gave me, loaded up fine.

Restarted the computer both times and fired up the wireless and it works great!

Thank you for the great information, Paul.

Your quick responses and accurate information was needle in a haystack compared to the hundreds of pages of junk I read through.

Thanks again

You're very welcome.

Glad to have been of assistance in keeping a beloved oldie in service.

Hi Paul,

You seem to be the resident expert out here. I recently had Brighthouse come out and replace my modem with a Ubee modem/router. All the devices in my house work except for my HP ProBook 4710s. It is running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, SP1. I have the Atheros AR9285 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter.

When attempting to use my WiFi, I receive a "This page can't be displayed" for almost every website I attempt to visit. If I can get on Yahoo, none of the links work. I updated from Internet Explorer 9 to 10 and also installed Google Chrome, but neither fixed the issue. When I connect directly to router, I have some success accessing sites, but they are typically not the full site with graphics.

Any ideas?

I really appreciate your help.

Jon

Hi, Jon:

The 4710s is a rather old model, so if you have never updated the wireless driver for the Atheros card, that may be the cause of the problem, since your router has been updated.

Give this driver a try and see if that resolves your dilemma.
