This article will explain how to update the Intel HD graphics driver on the above platforms to the latest driver directly from Intel.
This works for both notebook and desktop PC's with the onboard Intel graphics adapter.
Look at the Intel driver file link in this article under the 'This download is valid for the product(s) listed below,' section for the complete list of supported processors and/or graphics adapters.
Important note: If your PC has the switchable Intel/Nvidia or Intel/AMD graphics, this may cause issues with the discrete graphics adapter, based on the feedback from one of the comments at the bottom of this article. If your notebook has a switchable graphics configuration, update the Intel graphics driver at your own risk.
Background...Many of us like to have the latest graphics drivers installed, and we may even find some programs will not work unless there is a certain version graphics driver installed.
However, when you download and run the latest Intel graphics driver, you are usually met with an error that states in substance that you need to use the customized Intel graphics driver from the PC's manufacturer.
Here is how to get around that error...
First, create a system restore point so that you can roll back to the current graphics driver you have installed, just in case the updated driver does not work to your expectations.
Next, download and save the latest Intel HD graphics driver ZIP file for the model Intel HD graphics adapter your notebook comes with (HD 520, HD 620 UHD 620...).
This is the latest driver as of November 14, 2019:
Unzip the graphics driver file to its folder. Do not do anything with the files in the folder.
To unzip the file, right click on the graphics driver zip file you downloaded, and select Extract All.
Go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category
Click on the Intel HD graphics adapter listed there.
Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Click on Have Disk, and browse to the unzipped graphics driver folder>Graphics>iigd_dch (setup information file), click Next, and the driver should install.
Be patient, as it can take a few minutes for the driver to completely install.
When the installation is finished, restart the PC.
If you install the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant (Intel® DSA), after you manually install the driver, it should in the future, automatically install the latest graphics driver without having to do the manual install.
