Hi @scouse3101,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP LaserJet MFP 281FDW is leaving faint lines on the left side of the paper, whether printing text or blank pages, this issue can often be related to problems with the drum, toner cartridges, or other internal components. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Toner Cartridges

Inspect Toner Cartridges:

  • Open the printer and carefully inspect the toner cartridges. Look for any signs of damage, leakage, or uneven toner distribution.

Reinstall or Replace Cartridges:

  • Remove the toner cartridges and reinstall them to ensure they are seated properly.
  • If the cartridges are old or damaged, replace them with new ones.

Clean the Cartridges:

  • Gently clean the surface of the toner cartridges with a lint-free cloth to remove any excess toner that could be causing lines.

2. Check the Drum Unit

Inspect the Drum:

  • The drum unit may be causing the lines if it’s dirty or worn out. Check for any visible damage or toner buildup on the drum.

Clean the Drum:

  • If your drum unit can be cleaned, follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning it. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe away any toner residue.

Replace the Drum:

  • If the drum is old or damaged, consider replacing it. Consult your printer’s manual for the correct replacement drum model.

3. Perform Printer Maintenance

  • Many printers have a built-in cleaning utility to help resolve print quality issues. Check your printer’s control panel or software for a cleaning or calibration option and run it.
  • Ensure there are no paper jams or obstructions inside the printer that could affect print quality.

4. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Visit the HP Support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve print quality issues.

5. Check Paper Quality

  • Ensure you are using the recommended type and quality of paper for your printer. Poor-quality or damaged paper can affect print results.
  • Check the paper path for any debris or obstructions that might be causing print defects.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
