Hi @LisaPu47,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP DeskJet 4100e is displaying a message to use setup cartridges even though they are already installed, and the HP Smart app is prompting you to install startup cartridges, this typically indicates an issue with the cartridges not being recognized or properly installed. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check Cartridge Installation
- Turn On the Printer: Ensure your printer is powered on.
- Open the Cartridge Access Door: This is usually located on the front of the printer.
- Remove and Reinstall Cartridges:
- Remove Cartridges: Carefully remove the ink cartridges from their slots.
- Inspect Cartridges: Check for any protective tape or packaging that might still be on the cartridges.
- Reinstall Cartridges: Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their correct slots until they click into place.
2. Clean Cartridge Contacts
- Turn Off the Printer: For safety, turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove Cartridges: Take out the ink cartridges.
- Clean Contacts:
- Cartridge Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges (the copper-colored area).
- Printer Contacts: Also gently clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridges make contact.
- Dry and Reinstall: Let everything dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.
3. Check for Firmware Updates
- Open HP Smart App: Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
- Select Your Printer: Choose the HP DeskJet 4100e from the list.
- Check for Updates: Go to Printer Settings or Manage Printer and check if there are any firmware updates available. Update if necessary.
4. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall outlet.
- Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds.
- Plug In and Turn On: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
5. Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Verify Cartridges: Ensure you are using the correct setup cartridges for your model. Sometimes, using the wrong cartridges can cause errors.
- Check Expiration Dates: Confirm that the cartridges are not expired or damaged.
6. Use the HP Smart App to Troubleshoot
- Open HP Smart App: Open the HP Smart app on your device.
- Run Diagnostics: Use the app to run diagnostics or follow any troubleshooting steps it provides.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
