872 Cartridge not accepted

HP Recommended
JP OfficeJet Pro 8720
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am unable to install a black cartridge.

Error message: Cartridge Problem

Remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge (K), making sure it is correctly installed.

If this message continues to appear, replace the indicated cartridge.

I receive this message with each of the three cartridges I have (one HP and two "off brands").  All have worked perfectly in the past.  Firmware is up-to-date.  Have cleaned the contacts on all cartridges.

Appreciate any insight, expert advice, help.

Thanks

Steve
