HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One Printer

I needed to replace my black ink and ordered a new cartridge from Amazon which I have done many times before.  When I installed the new cartridge the printer said there was a cartridge problem and to remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed.  I did this numerous times and then I put in the old cartridge and it recognized it as an old cartridge.  I returned the cartridge to Amazon and they replaced it but I'm still getting the same message with the second new cartridge.  I've turned off the printer, disconnected it and checked the terminals?  Can it truly be two bad cartridges?

@Taramisu23, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your 910XL ink cartridge not being accepted by printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It’s unlikely that you received two bad cartridges in a row, though it’s not impossible. Here are a few troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:

Check for Firmware Updates

  • HP sometimes releases updates that block non-genuine cartridges or have bugs affecting recognition.
  • Go to HP’s support website and check for the latest firmware update for your HP OfficeJet 6958.

Reset the Printer

  • Remove the new black ink cartridge.
  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait 5–10 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Reinstall the cartridge when prompted.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and remove the ink cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab dampened with distilled water to clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Let it dry completely before reinstalling.

Check for Genuine HP Cartridge

  • Ensure the replacement cartridge is an official HP 902 or 902XL (if applicable).
  • If it's a third-party or remanufactured cartridge, some printers may reject them.

Try a Different Cartridge

  • If possible, test with another new black cartridge from a different source.
  • If another cartridge works, the issue is with the first two replacements.
  • If no black cartridge works, the printer may have a hardware issue.

Let me know if this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
