HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 All-in-One Printer

My printer stopped printing in color over a year ago.  I ended my subscription for instant ink and chose to buy a plain HP 910 cartridge to use as recommended by the instant ink email after ending my subscription.   After buying a new 910 black cart. the printer says the other colored cart are instant ink and won't allow the printer to function, even though they are old and the color portion hasn't printed in over a year.  How do I get to use the new cartridge that I bought and only print in black and white.  Seems like reasonable ask.

@Ronest, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Try Removing the Color Cartridges:

  • Since you're only trying to print in black and white, remove the color cartridges altogether. Your printer should still be able to print using only the black ink cartridge (HP 910).
  • Reboot the printer after removing the color cartridges and check if it lets you print in black and white without any complaints.

Set Printer to Black and White Only (via Printer Settings):

  • If removing the color cartridges doesn't work, go into the print settings on your computer and manually set it to print in black and white:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers (on Windows).
    • Right-click on your printer and choose Printing Preferences.
    • Look for the Color tab and select Black & White or Grayscale.
    • This will ensure that the printer prints without using any color ink.

On a Mac:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your printer, then choose Options & Supplies > Print Settings.
  • Choose Black & White or Grayscale.

Reset Printer to Factory Settings:

  • Since the Instant Ink program might have messed with the printer’s ink settings, you could reset the printer to factory settings to “forget” the Instant Ink subscription:
    • Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults (steps may vary depending on the printer model).
    • Once reset, try installing only the black ink cartridge and see if the printer stops complaining about the color cartridges.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • It’s possible your printer’s firmware is still holding on to the old Instant Ink settings. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed:
    • Visit HP’s official support website and download the latest firmware for your model.
    • After updating, the printer might let you use the regular black cartridge and ignore the color ones.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue
