HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Replaced empty cyan cartridge with new HP cartridge.  Continually get a message that the cartridge is damaged.  Replaced it again with another new cartridge.  Same message.  Have unplugged & replugged.  On/off switch several times.

@JeffF8, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're seeing a "cartridge is damaged" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (N911g) after replacing your cyan cartridge, even with a brand new HP original cartridge and you've already tried power cycling the printer. Let's work through this together.

Verify Cartridges Are Genuine HP

Please confirm both cyan cartridges are genuine HP 951 or 951XL cartridges. Look for:

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Corroded or misaligned contacts can cause false “damaged” errors.

Steps:

  1. Turn the printer on and open the cartridge access door.
  2. Remove the cyan cartridge.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean:
The gold contacts on the cartridge.
The contacts inside the printhead (where the cartridge slides in).
  4. Let it dry completely, then reinstall the cartridge.

Repeat with the second new cyan cartridge if needed.

Reset the Printer

Sometimes an internal memory error causes the printer to misread cartridge data.

Reset steps:

  1. With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the rear.
  2. Unplug the cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back into the wall and then into the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer.
