Hi @Roelanie,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand printing issues like zigzag patterns, particularly when switching to higher quality settings, can be frustrating, especially with a brand-new printer like the HP OfficeJet Pro 9720 Wide Format. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check and Align the Printhead:

  • Printhead Alignment: Misalignment of the printhead can cause zigzag patterns in prints, especially at higher quality settings. Use the printer's built-in tools to align the printhead.
    • Go to the printer's control panel and find the option to align the printhead under Maintenance or Tools.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment process.

2. Update Firmware and Drivers: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, printing issues can be caused by outdated firmware.
  • Visit the HP Support website and check for any available updates for your printer model.
  • Also, ensure that the printer driver on your computer is up to date.

3. Check Paper Type and Quality Settings:

  • Make sure that the paper type selected in the printer settings matches the paper you are using.
  • Sometimes, using the wrong paper type setting, especially with high-quality print settings, can cause printing errors.

4. Run a Print Quality Diagnostic:

  • Run a print quality diagnostic from the printer's control panel.
  • This tool will help identify and possibly fix issues with ink nozzles or print quality.

5. Clean the Printhead:

  • If the printhead is clogged or dirty, it can cause issues like the one you're experiencing. Use the printhead cleaning tool in the printer's control panel to clean the printhead.
  • Avoid excessive cleaning as it can deplete ink levels.

6. Try a Different File or Software:

  • Test with another file or use different software to print the same image. This will help determine if the issue is with the specific file or software.

7. Perform a Printer Reset:

  • Sometimes a simple reset can clear up unexpected issues.
  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
