HP Smart says both recently replaced cartridges are OK. However, the black cartridge won't print. I've done all of the restarts recommended (unplugging the power cord and resetting to factory settings). I've tried removing the color cartridge, per one former HP employee. That just results in nothing on the printed page. I 've used HP Smart to clean the cartridges (both regular and advanced) several times.
Sometimes I have a red X in a circle displaying, which indicates an error, and sometimes I don't.
The cartridge is releasing ink, because it's left a couple of black smudges when I've removed and replaced it.
I'm at loss. Trying to chat with an agent just leads me off to another raft of questions, leading nowhere.

@ploren, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Restart the Printer and Computer
- Turn off the printer. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.
- Restart your computer to ensure there are no pending software issues.
Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Find and uninstall any HP printer software.
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and download the latest drivers. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
Update Printer Firmware
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
The red X typically indicates a hardware problem or a connectivity issue.
Access the printer's Wi-Fi settings: On the printer's control panel, navigate to the Wi-Fi setup menu. You may need to refer to the printer's manual for specific instructions on how to do this.
Verify the connection if the Wi-Fi is successfully connected by printing a network configuration page or performing a test print.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
