I bought an original HP 910XL ink cartridge on amazon to replace the empty black ink. The printer does not recognize it and so is completely useless! Putting back the empty cartridge that it used before, it doesn't recognize it either! I already tried taking out the cartridges, shutting down the printer and removing it from power, waiting a couple hours and rebooting it before replacing the cartridges. Did not work! Cleaned the surfaces with rubbing alcohol. Did not work! HP is so concerned that we don't use other cartridges that the printers just sabotage themselves and don't work at all

Hi @odschnei, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It looks like your HP OfficeJet 8020 printer is not recognizing the new original HP 910XL black ink cartridge. Since you've already tried basic troubleshooting steps, here are some additional solutions:
Hard Reset the Printer
Try a hard reset to clear any firmware glitches:
- Turn on the printer.
- Remove all ink cartridges.
- Unplug the printer while it's on.
- Wait for 10-15 minutes.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges one by one, ensuring each clicks into place.
Update the Printer Firmware
- Go to HP Support and download the latest firmware update for your HP OfficeJet 8020.
- Install the firmware and restart the printer.
Check Ink Cartridge Contacts
- Ensure the gold-colored chip/contact area on the cartridge is clean.
- If there are scratches or damage on the chip, the printer might not recognize it.
Try a Different Cartridge
- If possible, test with another HP 910/910XL cartridge to check if the issue is with the printer or the specific ink cartridge.
Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults
- From the printer touchscreen, go to:
- Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
- This will reset any stored ink cartridge data.
- Reinsert the ink and check if it is recognized.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
