Same as Peachkin. I have the HP Envy photo printer 7155 and have used the same cartridges time and time again.

Since earlier today, following a paper jam which I have cleared, says the cartridge displayed (black) is not communicating correctly with the printer. I have replaced the cartridge with a brand new hp cartridge. S

Same message. I have shut it down several times, unplugged several times, cleaned the contacts, checked for the latest drivers and firmware and still get the same message.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Thank you

@Alice19661908, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the ink cartridge not communicating with the printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP Envy Photo 7155 printer is having trouble recognizing the black ink cartridge, even after replacing it with a new HP-branded one. Since you've already tried several troubleshooting steps, here are a few more things you can check:

1. Reset the Printer

  • Remove the cartridge from the printer.
  • Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Wait for about 10-15 minutes to let the internal memory clear.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Reinsert the cartridge and check if the error persists.

2. Check for Residual Paper Fragments

Since this started after a paper jam, there might be tiny bits of paper still stuck inside the printer, especially near the cartridge area or rollers. Use a flashlight to check inside.

3. Hard Reset

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall socket as well.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors or extension cords).
  • Turn the printer back on.

4. Manually Clean the Cartridge & Printer Contacts

Even though you've cleaned them before, try the following method:

  • Turn off the printer and remove the cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the gold or copper-colored contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
  • Let it dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridge.

5. Check for Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure that you’re using the correct cartridge model (HP 64 Black or HP 64XL Black).
  • If it's a remanufactured or refilled cartridge, it might not be recognized properly.

6. Disable HP Cartridge Protection

If you’ve previously enabled HP Cartridge Protection, it might be preventing the printer from recognizing new cartridges:

  • Go to your printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) by typing its IP address into a browser (find it under Wireless Settings on the printer).
  • Navigate to Settings > Security > Cartridge Protection.
  • Disable HP Cartridge Protection.

7. Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware & Drivers

  • If you haven't already, check for firmware updates via HP Smart or HP’s support website.
  • Uninstall the printer from your computer, restart your system, and reinstall the latest drivers from HP’s website.

8. Try a Different Cartridge

Even if it’s a brand-new HP cartridge, it might be defective. If possible, try another cartridge to see if the issue persists.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
